Foolish Aficionado of the Heart

The Sun Also Rises, written by Ernest Hemingway, is a source of inspiration to this poem. The book is about bullfighting, fiestas, drinking wine, love, matadors and aficionados. It is certainly one of my favourite books and I am itching to see the bull runs and matadors in real life as soon as opportunity presents itself, and preferably the Festival of San Fermin in Pamplona itself.

Once I visit the fiesta I will be sure to return to this entry to add a picture of a matador in the ring.

Foolish Aficionado of the Heart

In the fiesta I witnessed how a spark of passion

Can ignite a young bull into a furnace of irrationality

Emerald eye guided horn into my chest of counsel;

Intoxicated by love, made as obstinate as granite

His foolish words bend to suit his prey’s ears

His ruthless selfish gene his alpha and only star

He is fighting against the suspicious world

Like righteous knight with sword – alas a jester

Pry open your eyes seedling and infant. See the light.

See the destruction in your wake, the gore and flesh

Stop pursuing that crimson flag, lest you be slayed

By the ravenous matador of naïve foolish hearts
